DIY Sushi at Home Tips

If you are new to making sushi at home, we highly recommend you go check out our Beginner's guide to making sushi. There we share a step by step guide to making sushi, along with all the equipment and sushi ingredients you will need to get started. Plus we share our chef tips for perfecting your sushi rolls.

Once you have mastered the basics get creative and have some fun by trying a range of sushi fillings. Experimenting with different sushi fillings, whether classic or unique, allows you to personalize your sushi rolls for taste and dietary needs.

Types of sushi rolls

Sushi rolls come in all shapes, from the classic nigiri to delicious inari, each type offers a unique taste and experience. So have fun trying our a range of different types of sushi.

  • Nigiri: Hand-formed rice topped with a slice of fish or seafood. Often garnished with wasabi or a small amount of sauce.
  • Sashimi: Thinly sliced raw fish or seafood served without rice. It's typically accompanied by soy sauce and wasabi.
  • Maki: Rolled sushi made by placing ingredients (fish, vegetables) on rice, wrapping them in seaweed (nori), and slicing them into bite-sized pieces. Variations include: Futomaki: Thick rolls filled with multiple ingredients. Hosomaki: Thin rolls typically containing one main ingredient. Uramaki: Inside-out rolls where the rice is on the outside.
  • Temaki: Hand-rolled sushi in a cone shape, made by rolling nori around rice and fillings.
  • Onigiri: Rice balls are often shaped into triangles or ovals and filled with various ingredients. Try our Salmon onigiri recipe!
  • Inari: Sushi rice encased in a pocket of sweet, marinated tofu skin.
  • Sushi roll bowls: For a non-traditional option sushi roll bowls are a healthy, easy dinner. Like our Miso salmon rice bowl.

Classic Sushi Fillings

Traditional sushi fillings like fresh tuna, salmon, and crab will always be the most popular sushi rolls. These timeless ingredients have earned their place as favourites among sushi lovers.

Tuna and salmon offer rich, melt-in-your-mouth textures, while crab (or Kani) delivers a subtly sweet and savoury flavour. And of course, cucumber and avocado bring that perfect balance of freshness and creaminess. With these classic sushi fillings, you can recreate authentic sushi flavours right in your own kitchen! We also find these classic sushi rolls are a great place to start for a beginner and are always popular with kids.
