What is sumac?
Sumac is a less known but well used spice in Middle Eastern food. It comes from dried ground berries from the wild sumac flower, which grows well in subtropical and temperate regions through out the world.
This delicious spice is a wine red, with a tangy, hint of citrus flavour. Used as a traditional herbal medicine for centuries, it is a rich source of antioxidants.
This spice is definitely worth a try for its flavour profile and potential health benefits too!
Ingredients
You only need 4 ingredients to whip up this salad dressing:
- Natural yoghurt - for this recipe you just want plain unsweetened yoghurt.
- Ground sumac - a less well known spice but you should be able to pick it up from your local supermarket. I have seen substitutes for sumac using citrus fruit but honestly just go hunting around the spice aisle and use the real product!
- A pinch of salt
- The juice of half a lemon

How to make a sumac yoghurt dressing
This oil free salad dressing is super simple to make. Add the yoghurt to a small mixing bowl, sprinkle over the sumac. Add the salt and squeeze over the lemon juice then mix well.
And enjoy!
Storage
Once the sumac yoghurt is prepared, it can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge and will stay fresh for 3-4 days. This is a great salad dressing to have ready on the go. We love storing it in a small sealed glass jar, then just give it a good shake before drizzling over your salad.
Serving suggestions
We love this dressing paired with beautiful grilled Moroccan lamb!
The zing and freshness of this dressing will also work perfectly with fish, chicken or roasted vegetables. It's a great dressing to perk up a simple side salad (works best on crunchy lettuces like cos, baby gem or iceburg) or pack in a little container to add some flavour to your work lunch.
